Reminder of the numbering and lettering of lipids. What is important here is that animal fat is almost always unbranched and is in the cis configuration and most of them are even numbered. Collection of the common fatty acids that are occurring. Linoleate and linolenate acid are essential fatty acids that we can"t synthesize and must be provided by nutrition. Today we will focus on fatty acids as fuel molecules. Triacylglyceroles are uncharged and will pack very well in specific tissues. These tissues are the adipose tissues containing almost all of the lipid that provides fuel for the cells in our body. Whenever cells and organs need energy, the triacylglycerides have to be mobilized. Under certain conditions, glucose is not abundantly available. Fatty acids then can provide the energy needed for the cell. They have to somehow be mobilized from the adipose tissue and arrive at the appropriate tissue that requires energy. The first step is mobilization in adipose tissue.
