So there are two classes of nucleotides defined on the pentose sugar they have. Ribonucleotides is one type of nucleotide that contains ribose. The one thing that differentiates between the two is that ribose has a hydroxyl group on the 2 prime carbon while deoxyribose has a hydrogen on the 2 prime carbon. The 2 prime hydroxyl is making the rna les stable than dna. So under certain conditions, the 2 prime hydroxyl can act as a nucleophile and break phosphodiester linkages that are linking these nucleotides together and can destroy the rna and create a strand break there. For that reason, often times, deoxyribose is most of the time will be your genetic material. This is why dna is made out of deoxyribose; it is more stable.
