BIOLOGY 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Bird Vocalization, Conservation Biology, Coevolution
Document Summary
Taste and smell can be the same (esp. in water) Used in dark environments, when directional information is unimportant, or when there are consistent wind or water currents. Phylogeny: perceptual abilities often conserved, but not always, they do evolve. Behavior can shape evolution of sensory systems: ex. Co-evolution of visual signals and eye morphology: wasps very bad resolution, ommitidia, maximum facet size is positively associated with eye size and presence of visual signals. Environment/ ecology: organisms in low light environments probably don"t rely on vision. Relative size of perceptual organs: more receptors, better perception. In cave systems all over the world, surface fish have invaded the cave habitat. How do we expect them to adapt to living in a cave: reduced eye o. Fish choose other mates based on color patterns: murky water makes it difficult for fish to see, they no longer mate according to color preferences, the two species collapse together.
