BIOLOGY 171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Logistic Function, Exponential Growth, Population Ecology
Document Summary
Bio 171 lecture 16: population ecology and population growth. Population growth basics (pdf posted on lp and ctools) Vocabulary (you should be able to define and use all of these terms correctly. ) Population ecology is the study of how and why the number of individuals in populations change over time that is, it is the study of the dynamics of populations. A population is a group of individuals from the same species that live and interact in the same area at the same time. One reason we care about how populations change is that we often want to predict the number of organisms that will occur in a particular location at a time point in the future. This is important for many applications, including conservation, management of harvested populations (especially in fisheries), and pest control (where we hope to decrease population size over time). However, do not pay attention to the equations in the text.
