Pores make air chambers for photosynthetic cells that do gas exchange. The rhizoids are on the lower surface of the liverworth. The hairlike extensions of the epidermal cell have the appearance of roots but they do not have the same functions as roots. The rhizoids attach the plant to the surface, by anchoring t: gemmae cups are a cup shaped structure. Once the cup is lled with water, the cells oat away. Mature gammae inside the cup then detach, germinate new plants: archegoniophores not only have a more umbrella-like shape and are more branched out than the antheridiophores, but they also carry the female gametophytes. On the other hand, the antheridiophores have a more rounded structure and carry the male gametophytes.
