The s cells were smooth because when he grew colonies of them on a plate, they appeared shiny and glossy. The r cells were dull on the plate. This difference has to do whether they make a capsule (smooth) or not (rough) The capsid tends to protect the bacteria when they get inside the body. So they"re able to kill mice (and people) Noncapsid cells get killed off easily inside the body so they are avirulent. He killed the s cells through heating in a way that keeps the capsule intact (chemically unaltered) but killed the s cells. Once injected into the mice, it didn"t kill the mice. So it wasn"t the capsule that was doing the killing.
