BIOLOGY 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Helicase, Chromosome, Eukaryote
Document Summary
At first, people thought protein were the genetic information. He was studying the bacteria which was causing a flu 10 years ago. Found variance of these cells: s and r cells. The s cells were smooth because when he grew colonies of them on a plate, they appeared shiny and glossy. The r cells were dull on the plate. This difference has to do whether they make a capsule (smooth) or not (rough) The capsid tends to protect the bacteria when they get inside the body. So they"re able to kill mice (and people) Noncapsid cells get killed off easily inside the body so they are avirulent. He killed the s cells through heating in a way that keeps the capsule intact (chemically unaltered) but killed the s cells. Once injected into the mice, it didn"t kill the mice. So it wasn"t the capsule that was doing the killing.
