Before class on thursday, be sure to read over, or skim, the added material from a book that is available. Recall the video about sustainability engineering: the dryer and using less energy. Looking at more than the components of the dryer, but the whole clothes washing cycle. They stated with a small system, then looked at other factors that affected the system. No calculations were performed, not assessments, just thinking about the process. Understanding the systems, and the main factors that affect it. Raw material extraction: interested in where the raw material comes from, and the environmental impacts of getting it. Material processing: the material goes through a processing process, processing it for the particular purpose. Manufacturing: now have processed material, putting things together. Product delivery: moving it from one location to another. What is important, is the way we look at the system.
