Why are we so worried about violent media and crime: stats show crimes happen very often; we have a large prison population. Violence and crime is a huge issue in the us, even when compared to other countries. Factors that increase violence: provocations and frustrations, poverty, easy access to guns, drug and alcohol use, gang involvement, parental neglect, violent media. Gallup poll: 61% of americans think there is too much violence on tv, 58% of americans think there is too much profanity on tv. Even though content providers think they"re giving us what we want, the majority of people don"t want that. Measuring violent media: the payne fund studies. Looked at innapropriate stuff in films/movies: content analyses of prime-time tv in the 50s and 60s. People only worried about violence on tv at this point b/c tv wasn"t widespread until then: message system analysis by cultivation researchers (beginning in 1967)
