EARTH 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: North American Plate, Pacific Plate, Divergent Boundary
Document Summary
When two plates collide which one sinks - denser. Where is crust created - at divergent boundaries (mor-underwater, rift zone-land) Volatile compounds cause magma to be specifically explosive. Mt rainer / all of the volcanoes on the san andreas coast. Two oceanic plates - one subducting under the other. Here it is called a volcanic island arc. Linear line of a bunch of islands vs. the mountain arc (in the first pic) Hawaiian islands - the pacific plate is older and denser so it is subducting underneath the north american plate. Is it growing or shrinking: growing - more crust creation than destruction. Of convergent boundary subduction zone going down - more friction underneath the continent: where the plate has gone down deep - earthquake happens. Ex. east pacific rise - divergent (arrows moving outwards - also shape looks like mor)
