Document Summary

At the start of the war israel was a small unified country. Israel"s population was 85% jewish before the 6 day war. Six days later, israel held over 4x more land than they had before. Percentage of non-jews changed to 38% after gaining 1 million non-jewish arabs. Israelis and palestinians are still arguing over the future of the territories. The labor party originally thought that its control of most of the territory would be only temporary. They planned to exchange most of the territory in return for peace. By 1977, an exchange of lands for peace had become very unlikely. They had failed to appreciate the depth of arab anger and resentment over the creation of israel. What began as a temporary occupation began to acquire an air of permanence. The compact nation-state of israel had become a very different entity. Mostly bedouins with no particular animosity towards israel.
