Varieties of anti-colonialism: overview: nationalism compared to other anti-colonial movements. Look at nationalist movements that developed in 20 t h century that eventually took control of colonial states. Distinguish between nationalist movement & other forms of anti-colonial protests. Only a small fraction of revolts, protests, rallies could be defined as nationalist. Distrust of foreign control (aka desire to kick out aliens) was very common. For ex. , powerful resistance movements that arose as soon as various countries were invaded. Save the king movement in vn led by confucian literatis, erupted after french seized imperial capital of hue. Burma: outbreak of guerrilla resistance around 1885 till 1995 after 3 r d anglo- Like 20 t h century nationalist movements, these rebellions tried to defend local society against foreign dominations but differ from nationalist movements in 4 key respects: Ideological - focus of loyalty was not to nation-state, no idea of popular sovereignty. These revolts were inspired by old & dynastic loyalty.
