But no leader from the east died, but 3 others from 3 di erent regions. Leader of 1966 coup: major-general aguiyi-ironsi ibo, but looked towards the unity of nigeria it was the southern leaders who were to be celebrated as the leaders. Ironsi refused to respond to the demands of northerns to put coup leaders on trial. July 29 1966: coup of northern secession secession was in the north interests thought b/c they would be blocked from revenue from oil in the east and they would be land locked. Col. yakuba gowon - had interests in a united nigeria. Sept/oct 1966: another rampage of killings of ibo in the north.
