The un is an association of sovereign states. Sovereign states are jealous of each other (especially smaller ones are afraid of intervention by stronger states) Ex. of strong state intervening in the affairs of a weaker one: allied intervention in russian civil war 1918, soviet interventions in hungary, Czechoslovakia and afghanistan, american intervention in vietnam, turkish intervention in cyprus 1974. The un charter gives a lot of responsibility to great powers as permanent members of the security council. Article 2. 7 protects national sovereignty from intervention- the article forbids the. Un to intervene, in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state. The job of the un is to intervene to prevent conflict where we can, to put a stop to it when it has broken out, or to at least contain it and prevent it from spreading. Chapter vi: deals with the peaceful settlement of disputes.
