Legally equal entities- all different political entities but are all legally equal, they shouldn"t have authority over others (for example the federal authority has control over state governments this isn"t supposed to happen internationally) Mutual recognition- recognize one another (diplomatic recognition) states identify others as states as their legal equals. Internal and external sovereignty- within their own borders they"re supposed to have the monopoly on the legitimate use of force, the gov can use force against you (if you break the law). But you don"t have the right to use force against the government (standoff in oregon example) Territorial definition of politics- borders that limit how far their control goes. Main point: the sovereign state system helps to solve some issues in world politics, while making it harder to solve others.
