Neurons first on the dorsal side of the spinal cord. Commissural neurons produce axons down to the ventral median of the spinal cord. Can be assayed by morphology and molecular markers. Motor neurons are found on the ventral half. They project their axons out to innervate muscles. They can be assayed by morphology and molecular markers. There are two non neural cell types that are in the pattern of the dorsal ventral axis and are both quite important for the formation of the pattern. These are the roof plate cells (not neurons, can be assayed by morphology and molecular markers) On the opposite side are the floor plate neurons which can be assayed by morphology markers and functional assay. There is a mesodermal structure the notochord which is derived from the dorsal mesoderm.
