Internal autonomy = state controls legitimate use of force w/in its borders. External autonomy = state controls foreign policy w/o int"l interference. Defined territory = areas of land w/ delineated borders. Permanent population = people (citizens) who live there. Effective control of territory & population by gov"t = taxes, police, services. Preferences = actors know what they want. Capabilities = ability to influence other actors (ex: military capability) Perceptions = what actor thinks other actor will do anticipation. States = distinctive political unit of wp, ideally have both . Diplomatic recognition = ability to enter into relations w/ other states. Legitimacy = belief that state is legal & proper governing authority w/in borders. Failed state = extreme lack of legitimacy. Unitary actor assumption = state is singular actor (opposite of idea of corporate actors) Un composed of 3 branches: secretary general, secretariat, int"l court of justice. Capabilities & perceptions w/in rules & institutions.
