They agreed that the rights covered in the cra66 were necessary to freedom. The rights afforded under the cra were the dividing line between slavery and free labor. Own yourself as a matter of law. The right to: contract, property, sue, be a witness. Everyone had to follow the same criminal code. Black codes are a violation of free labor. In general, radicals thought social rights were civil rights. Social rights were part of the social sphere and weren"t a civil right. The klan was on one end, frederick douglass on the other. Everyone (including the radical republicans and the centrists) were still racist. Centrists were worried about race mixing and committed to white superiority. Northern democrats agreed with the southern democrats that the definition of freedom was self ownership and the right to contract and own property. Didn"t believe in equal pains and punishments. They were committed to equality under law. They were having problems getting the cra66 enforced.
