PSYCH 335 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sexual Selection, Habituation
Document Summary
Sexual selection-> subset of natural selection focusing on the acquisition of mates. 2 sides: competition within sex- usually male-male, assessment signals; choice between the sexes- usually females choosing males, ornaments. Often indicate size or fighting ability may be cues. May involve traits evolved for assessment-assessment signals common in mammals. Allow animals to resolve disputes at low cost- mismatched animals don"t bother fighting. Ex: roaring in red deer- pitch of roar correlated with size; parallel walking, multiple signals, only fight when closely matched in size. Geladas: multilevel society; one male units: teams, bands, herds . almost largest group of primates in the world . also bachelors. Chest patch redder chest, more attractive to females. Habituation: learn to ignore signals from dishonest signalers.
