Freud believed that it allowed him to retrace the patients" distant past, following a chain of thought to their unconscious. Memories from childhood could be retrieved and released. Conscious awareness is the iceberg that floats above the surface. Unconscious mind is the larger part of the iceberg. Thoughts, wishes, feelings and memories were stored temporarily in a preconscious area--we retrieve them into conscious awareness. We repress, or forcibly block from our consciousness because they are too unsettling to acknowledge. Strives to satisfy basic drives to survive, reproduce, and aggress. Ex: someone who would sooner party now than sacrifice today"s pleasure for future success and happiness. Contains our partly conscious perceptions, thoughts, judgments and memories.
