PSYCH 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Block Diagram, Cognitive Psychology, Working Memory
Document Summary
The means by which we retain and draw on our past experiences to use that info in the present. The dynamic mechanisms associated with storing, retaining, and retrieving info about past experiences. Involves conscious recollection: can be recall or recognition, participant knows they are trying to recall info from their memory. Implicit memory tasks: require participants to complete a task. The stages of memory: getting info in very limited duration, keep only what is processed visual=iconic; auditory=echoic. Memory/learning: sperling (1960) tests the capacity of iconic memory, whole report procedure. Flash a matrix of letters for 50 milliseconds. Identify as many letters as possible: subjects typically remembered 4, sensory memory, can only recall a few items, but can select which ones from a larger set. Large capacity: held for a very short duration, old info pushed out by incoming, attention determines what makes it to next stage, short-term memory.
