PSYCH 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Plasma Osmolality, Thyroid, Tummo
Document Summary
Homeostasis: the state of equilibrium that keeps the body in the survivable range. Homeostatic mechanisms: keep our bodies in state of equilibrium. Made of glands (ground of cells that secretes a hormone into the bloodstream) & hormones (chemical that travels in the blood & triggers changes in other parts of the body) Thyroid gland secretes triiodothyronine (t3), thyroxine (t4) and calcitonin, which increase rate of cell metabolism and production of proteins. Hormones interact w/other hormones by coordinating their effects, signaling production of other hormones, & opposing action of other hormones (and, if-then, not) Anticipator function: signals furnace to turn off before the temp reading in the thermostat reaches the set temp. Body temp varies throughout the day as a part of our normal circadian rhythm (lowest in the am and peak afternoon) Physicians measure body parts like the tongue, armpit, eardrum, that approximate core body temp (like deep internal organs)
