PSYCH 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Ovulation, Growth Factor
Document Summary
Like lh controls testosterone and fsh (follicle stimulating hormone) controls sperm production, does lh control estrogen and fsh egg production in females: lh stimulates production of estrogen (positive feedback, more lh=more estrogen) and fsh matures the egg. Intrinsic vs extrinsic in nervous system development: intrinsic: inside cells, certain genes in that cell turned on, effects cell differentiation, extrinsic: outside, environmental factors, cell to cell contact. The neurons that get more of the hormones are strengthened and those who do not get any get killed off. Without ovulation there is not enough estrogen for the pathway to become sensitized and lordosis will not occur. Lordosis is needed for a female to be receptive and reproductively successful.
