PSYCH 240 Lecture 4: Lecture 4 Notes
Document Summary
Pattern recognition: the process of matching organize sensory input to stored representations in memory. Template theory: distal (entity) proximal (projection on retin) percept, simple template matching, have some memory of different things stored. Match the item from our memory to the percept: percept memory representation, matching. Match proximal to memory in order to form percept: basics of template theory. To recognize the incoming stimuli, you compare to templates in memory until a match is found. Can"t find any close matches, then a new memory is created: template theory works well in controlled, standardized environments. Problem: in the real" world, the input is much more variable: problem: obstructed objects. If an object is obscure it won"t match any memory template too well: problem: varying orientations. Rotations/transformations may cause for inaccurate matching of memory templates. Faces are an exception to the rule: usually recognition is not affected much by the orientation of the object: weakness of theory.
