PSYCH 240 Lecture 4: Lecture 4 Notes
Document Summary
Pattern recognition: pattern recognition is the process of matching sensory input to stored representations in memory. Not just vision sound patterns tastes, touch, etc. One of the simplest earliest theory to explaining pattern recognition: feature theory. Break down patterns into features and then combine them: structural descriptions, gestalt. Recognizing a pattern: distal (object) proximal (image on retina) percept (what we perceive) Template theory of pattern recognition = matching: simple template matching, have some memory of different things; we have it stored in memory. Match the item from our memory representation to the percept: percept memory representations, matching. Match proximal to memory in order to form percept: basics of template theory. To recognize the incoming stimuli, compare templates in memory until a match is found. If you can"t find any close matches (e. g. , the iguana), then create a new memory: template theory works well in controlled, standardized environments. Very little variability in environment allows for this to work well.
