Ideal and ought self have 2 approaches in pursuing goals. Promotion focus - focus on attaining positive outcomes. Prevention focus - focus on avoiding negative outcomes. Ego depletion - exerting self control can exhaust us psychologically. Self control draws on a limited resource. Social cognition - how people think about themselves and the social world, or more specifically, how people select, interpret, remember, and use social information to make judgements and decisions. Negativity bias - negative things draw out attention. It"s natural to want to nurture things with these features. Automatic thinking - without thinking unintentional, nonconscious, and effortless.
