SOC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Capgras Delusion, Change Blindness, Motion Perception
Document Summary
People have intact visual perception but are unable to process faces normally. Intact visual face recognition but impaired visual emotional processing (not being able to know that you know your mother is your mother & then deducing that they are their imposters) We caught our brain making guesses about what"s really happening out there. This is called change blindness: inability to detect changes in successively presented stimuli. Watched video of people switching places while asking for directions. Our intuition that we track visual details of our environment is illusory. How we perceive he world is shaped by our task goals (and thus attention (both cognitive attention & visual attention). Our brain makes continuity assumptions without checking all the details to confirm these assumptions. The problem: computing correspondence from one moment to the next, you have to make guesses about what happens from one moment to the next.
