Document Summary

Soc 100 - lecture 1 - the sociological imagination. Sociology is based on a variety of opinions regarding interrelations of society. Objectivity is rare in the study of society. In order to verify opinions, data and context are required. The goal of this class is to develop the capacity to look at anything and to make connections between past and present through a sociological perspective. Look at one picture and you can identify a lot about race, class, financial value, etc. Our life chances are very much dependent on historical and social conditions and not necessarily on our own merits. You have to discover and explore your behavior, your feelings, your desires, your thoughts, your success rates, your happiness. All of this is related to aspects of society. Ex. your acceptance to university of michigan is related to class and social connections, not only your grades.
