Sociology is all about asking questions to collect data. To know what is the percentage of married couples in the usa. You must be comparing apples with apples. Make sure that they are comparable, because many have different histories, economical systems, governmental systems. You have a certain number/percentage but it doesn"t tell you much (whether it is good or bad) unless you compare it to another society (country/state/community) Ex. to compare rates of incarceration in the united states with other industrialized nations. : a comparison of health care systems in the usa and western europe. Ex poverty now compared to the 60s and 80s. : to examine the patterns of divorce over time. Americans love to get divorced/remarried these days in comparison to the generation that got married after wwii, the majority has stayed married for decades.
