Factors that led to the emergence of sociology. Decline in religion as people began to believe that science could help bring truth. Before the enlightenment, people viewed the world as staic. People were born into the world, passed on from it, into the next world. Enlightenment thinkers saw the world as progressing, or moving forward. Enlightenment thinkers believed in the power of the individual. If individuals are given scieniic knowledge, they can employ science to help the world progress and move forward. The french revoluion brought on chaos blood. People viewed this as the opposite of progress. If this is what the enlightenment brings, they do not want it. Believe anarchy and insituions are crucial to keeping order in the world. Counter-enlightenment did not deny validity of science, but limited it to explaining how things work. There was a shit away from the general philosophy of what does it mean to be human .
