Document Summary

Methodology- direct observation doesn"t tell us anything meaningful. Marx adds materialism to bring hegel back from the supernatural; history is proceeding not towards the whole realization of spirit, but towards human freedom in the form of economic freedom. Marx + hegel = finding essence/truth within reality/what we see (realism) Mode of production- forces of production (technology that is used in different societies, like the plow in agriculture and the computer in modern societies) + relations of production ( Social classes- owner of means of production vs. non-owner of means of production: division of labor between owners, and non-owners. Difference between hegel & marx is like chicken and the egg- hegel says ideas/consciousness are the driving force that lead to material conditions, while marx says they"re reflection of material conditions. Realism- there are things that we can"t see through direct observation.
