Stats 250: introduction to statistics - lecture 1: turning data into information. A characteristic that differs from one individual to the next. Collected from a subset of a larger population. Leads to a statistic (a summary measure of sample data) Collected when all individuals in a population are measured. Leads to a parameter (a summary measure of population data) Places an individual or item into one of several groups or categories. Data is organized with a bar graph or pie chart. Typical classroom seat location (i. e. front, middle, or back of classroom) A type of categorical variable when the categories have an ordering or ranking. Soft drink size (small, medium, large, super-sized) Takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations such as adding or averaging makes sense.
