Document Summary
Lecture 15: tribal elders, play, and the diggers. Tribal elders: 3 categories: those who were truly tribal elders in the chronological sense, tied to the subculture. Seeing sound and hearing colors : don"t want to/can"t construct traditional community action. It is fun and resists all analysis and logical investigation: burrough"s factualism. *play is so prevalent and important that some anthropologists want to call our species. Victor turner: play is volatile and dangerous, mainstream channels this into approved versions of play, institutions seek to bottle/constrain play in vials of games of competition, strength (sports), chance, simulation (theatre), controlled disorientation (roller coasters) Hippie counterculture: normal social order gone, natural thing to do was to play. Play became the social norm, and seriousness became the exception. Play as ritual: play is a kind of dancing partner with ritual. Mainstream society depends on ritual to maintain tradition, haight used play to: live its life, continue its growth, maintain tradition.
