Reduced to a few essentials, fixed in nature by a few, simplified characteristics (e. g. arab terrorist) Representations of arab/muslim women: various states of dress (or undress) An unchanging image: rooted in orientalism and colonialism. Level of oppression/freedom depend on amount of clothing. But, binary can work against arab/muslim women: They will always look oppressed unless they"re dressed like how a western girl looks at the time. People who don"t know that much about muslim women. Or people who think they know a lot about muslim women. You know this because she"s like you may think thisbut here"s the reality . She"s saying they"re not oppressed by religion, but by the society they"re living in that interprets their religious texts in a certain way.
