Civil rights act of 1957 is the first civil right since reconstruction. Created a commission to monitor civil rights violations to black civil rights. Purpose was also to purpose remedies for infringements on black voting. Empowers justice department to start civil proceedings against states that discriminate on the basis of race. Posted state guards to prevent 9 students from attending school. Withdraws guards and leaves children unguarded to go to school. Eisenhower does not want to act but has to: sends guards down to protect students. 1960 motown to show the happier/ brighter side of african american history. Smokey robinson and the miracles was motown"s first backbones: most of the hits were written by him. Cant integrate audiences so they had one black night and the rest were white nights. Shows the contradictions of american society because everyone is allowed in as long as they had.
