Kennedy in the midst of election and election is close. Kennedy call judge to get mlk out of jail and this solidifies his win. Blacks expect kennedy to do something for him but nothing comes. Supreme court in 1946 ruled interstate buses to be illegal in irene morgan v. Extended to terminals in another supreme court ruling. May 1961 freedom riders start and the busses leave from washington dc. Reach atlanta on may 13: mlk is not for the freedom riders. When the greyhound bus reaches its next stop on may 14th the buss is firebombed. Other busses make it to birmingham, al on may 15, 1961 and were brutally beaten (they had 15 minutes to beat them up before police come) Most go back but few stay and work with diane nash: she signs college students from tennessee and ride to birmingham where they are arrested and dropped off at the border.
