Think about what would happen if you crossed alleles together. Mitosis starts with pre-cell and all two cells with the same amount of dna. In meiosis, you end up with four daughter cells with half of the dna: you also have homologous chromosome pairing in meiosis: called tetrads, you also have crossing over in meiosis. What is meant by the n : it is the number of chromosomes.
