CHEM 111 Lecture 33: CHEM111 Class 33
Document Summary
Chem111 lecture 33 gases and their properties. State of matter with minimal forces between the molecules. All gases have the same physical properties. Nit much reaction chemistry but some thinking like a chemist. Looking for explanations at the microscopic level observations at the macroscopic level. Simple relationship between p, v, and t that is not true for liquids and solids. Increase the pressure then the volume goes down and temperature goes up. P (force per unit area) large number have been used. Gas pressures are often measured with respect to atmospheric pressure, which is measured with a barometer: units are mm hg or torr . Pressure of the gas is atmospheric plus h mm hg. The standard atmosphere (at sea level) exerts a pressure of exactly 760 mm hg (written atm) 1 atm = 1. 013 bar = 101. 3 kpa = 760 torr = 14. 7 psi = 760 mm hg.
