Completely random: languages are arbitrary, some are less arbitrary (e. g. knock knock, splash, animal sounds, writing is also arbitrary, chinese is less arbitrary (written), but need to memorize more words. That are recognized by members of the community (people you communicate with) Fashion (e. g. wearing american flag clothing, shows pride) Asl is more precise, gesture is more vague. Body language varies from culture to culture. Gesture is additional to verbal communication, asl is a full form of communication. Facial expressions are more universal (e. g. smile when happy, frown when sad) Ischemia in the right hemisphere of the brain. Stroke patient"s expression is forced when he tries to smile, but normal when made to laugh. Tells us that facial expression is controlled by other parts of the brain.
