EDUC 305 Lecture 2: Class 2 Lecture
Document Summary
Idea of childhood itself is a social construction - true for last few hundred years at most. Prior to modern world children were seen as miniature adults with age 7 as end of time protection and parenting. In the 1700"s most children were working long hours on farms, education was secondary. In the 1800"s many children worked full time (12-14 hours) in factories, education as a class privilege. The industrial era - late 19th century - saw the start of more focus on child education and protection, mostly as a result of changes in the workforce and the increased need for educated workers. Definition of development - it is not just any change. Increasingly understood to be biologically based yet profoundly shaped by context. Changes that support a person"s capacity to respond to environmental demands. Control - the manner and strictness with which parents provide limits and discipline to their children. Responsiveness - includes affection, acceptance, and caring involved parenting.
