Autism Spectrum Disorder
9/27/16
First off, you cannot tell if the children in the pictures (on ppt) have been diagnosed with autism
spectrum disorder (ASD). There is not a certai look of children with ASD, their behavior is
what is diagnosable.
ASD is very complex and can be baffling.
First described by Leo Kanner in 1943 first use of the ord autis
Also called infantile autism or Kanner syndrome at the time.
Util the 97s autism was considered to be an emotional disturbance. Autism is sometimes
misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
People diagnosed with ASD have social, communication, learning and behavior problems.
People diagnosed with ADD only have emotional and behavioral problems, not learning. Also,
people diagnosed with ASD tend to have sensory issues, people diagnosed with ADD usually do
not.
o March 2014 CDC estimates 1/68 children have ASD. All racial and ethnic groups can be
effected, more prevalent in boys (4-5x more likely.)
o 30-51% of people diagnosed with ASD also have an intellectual disability (IQ<70)
o Siblings have greater risk of being born with Autism, especially twins. Thought to be genetic
disorder. Children born to older parents are higher risk.
o In 2008-2009 about 11,150 children under age 21 were diagnosed with autism in MA.
o Most often recognized around age 3 due to lack of socialization and development when
compared to peers.
This is a SPECTRUM disorder
Impairment can range from:
Autism level 1 = Aspergers disorder, high fuctioig >>> Autis leel  = severe autism, many more
impairments
Autism is a lifelong disorder, there is no cure but there are extensive treatments.
DSM Criteria for diagnosis can be found on SLIDE 16 of the ppt. Symptoms must be present in early
childhood, must limit/impair daily function, must not be better explained by an intellectual disability.
People diagnosed with autism are especially sensitive to noise, light, distractios… (see ideo o ppt for
example)
