The first scene of the play takes note of the worn furniture, weary aura, and feeble light. Significance of setting to the meaning of the work: The setting of the small, crowded home tells the reader that the younger family is poor and cannot afford a big, multi bedroom house, though they have rather large family. Plot summary: at left, a door leads to a bedroom which is shared by mama and her daughter, beneatha. At right, opposite, is a second room (which in the beginning of the life of this apartment was probably the breakfast room) which serves as a bedroom for walter and his wife, ruth. The younger family ishas recently come into some money but how the should spend it will test their values, dedication, perceptions, and family dynamic. The author refers to the past and how certain objects in the house, such as the rug, hold different pieces of the family"s history.
