Document Summary

Act i, scene i: gloucester"s attitude towards edmund is somewhat condescending. He claims he loves both his sons the same, but still believes edmund is less than edgar because edmund"s mother was a whore. Gloucester admits he was embarrassed and ashamed that. Edmund was born of a whores bed, before edmund was declared legitimate. I would play edmund as permanently angry, but more passive aggressively, than openly resentful. Edmund is conniving: he plans out his method of attack towards his brother, and all for the better love of his father. Goneril and regan flatter lear, playing alongside lear"s ego, professing their love of him, but i don"t believe either of them. The true extent of one"s love for another cannot be measured by words, only by actions, and neither of them take any action to show their love for their father. The only love they possess, is their love for their father"s power.
