Dedicated life to refugee issues and stateless persons. Evidence in 1800s had suggested the north pole was floating. Nansen build the fram to test this. Unique design to be locked in the ice. Idea was to lock ship in the ice and wait. Fram drifted with the pack ice for three years! Assume that the ice acts like a layer of water (which it does) Observed that the ice did not move in the same direction as the wind did. Instead it moved 20-40 deg to the right. Nansen visits ekman"s advisor, v. bjerknes, to discuss his observation. Ekman was tasked to look into it for his doctoral work. 1905 published famous theory of ekamn spiral. The coriolis effect deflects air and water to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. Velocity decreases with depth due to friction. Velocity turns to the right with depth due to coriolis in northern hemisphere.
