23 views2 pages

Document Summary

Segregation, even when not legally supported or enforced, is the leading cause for disparities in socioeconomic status. Differences in socioeconomic status directly affect the educational and job opportunities made available to people, and therefore affect their health. Black people have a higher mortality rate in respect to almost every major disease and a higher infant mortality rate than white people. Housing prejudice exists, and limits the area that black people can buy, even though it has been illegal in the us since 2000. The us has a segregation rating of . 66, which is extremely high. New or up- and-coming cities showed the least segregation, but places like the north and southeast showed extremely high amounts of segregation. Residential segregation leads to a less quality education for minority children, leading to a lower socioeconomic status, and therefore worse health. Employers even avoid locations heavily populated with african americans due to stereotypes and prejudices, further limiting employment opportunities.
