In traditional asian countries, babies start life at age one (becoming 2 yrs old on the first day of the subsequent lunar new year"s day) meaning life starts to count at conception, not birth. Stress during pregnancy leads to maternal and and infant depression & negative parenting. Adversity in early life are associated with risk of disease in adulthood. When a child is stressed, produces childhood cortisol that leads to accelerated sexual development. Belsky hypothesizes: stress leads to accelerated development to increase likelihood of reproduction. Teratogen: toxic agent that causes abnormalities, exposure can cause various degrees of damage. Thalidomide: a mild tranquilizer, caused 10,000 babies to be born w abnormalities, deformities linked to the time the mother took the drug. Some drugs & chemicals are turned to waste and eliminated by mother.
