Adolescent growth spurt begins at 9 for girls and 12 for boys. Age 6: brain is 95% of adult size. Girls: brain size reaches peak at 10. 5 yrs. Boys: brain size reaches peak at 14. 5 yrs. Lateralization increases, corpus callosum increases from age 4 until 20. Corpus callosum (white matter) coordinates memory and sensory. Contains axons surrounded by myelin, increases speed of transmission. Grey matter is most of brain, mostly cell bodies. By 5 months children prefer one hand over the other. Age 2 yrs, toddlers walk and run, though they are round and not well balanced. Age 2-3yrs, use both hands to accept cookies, use one hand at age 4 yrs. Preoperational stage: builds on schemas from previous stage, rudimentary language and thinking skills 2-7 yrs. Intuitive stage: 5-7 yrs children realize that thinking something does not make it so. Preconceptual stage: 2-5 yrs, play, language and symbols, words have power.
