Document Summary

There are three main sources of energy in the human body: immediate (immediate phosphagen) 10-30 seconds, short-term (anaerobic glycolysis) short duration, 20-180 minutes, long-term (oxidative) endurance, long duration, more than 3 minutes. Calorimetry used assess aerobic fitness through measures of respiration. Calorimetry is the measurement of heat produced. Two types of calorimetry: direct (actually measures the exact o2 amount) and indirect (not exact, but accurate) Direct calorimetry: measures heat directly, amount of heat produced is measured. Indirect calorimetry: measures heat indirectly through the amount of o2 utilized, vo2max, maximum amount of oxygen that can be consumed and used by the body, measure of fitness. Vo2max values: average males aged 20-29 years is 38-43 ml/kg/min, average females aged 20-29 years is 35-40 ml/kg/min, highest ever recorded vo2max value, male 94 ml/kg/min. Physical exercise that is characterized by brief, intermittent bursts of vigorous activity, interspersed by periods of rest or low intensity exercise. Work to rest ratios are set and variable.
