Document Summary

Kin100 lecture 22 exercise science and aging. Humans are living longer than they did years ago. As a result, the percentage of the population aged 65 and over is growing rapidly. In 1980 there were roughly 20 million people over the age of 65. In general, performance on many tasks declines with increasing age: age is also associated with increased variability in performance, meaning older individuals are less consistent in performing many tasks. The level of decline in performance and increase in variability is not the same for everyone. It is dependent on the biological age of the individual. Muscle strength: decreased strength, less muscle mass, more slow-twitch fibers. Cardiovascular function: lower maximal heart rate, lower vo2max. Rates of aging: physically dependent, physically frail, physically independent free from disease, physically fit, physically elite. Mhr: neural change, decrease in capillaries with age. With a resistance-training program, we see rapid increases in strength initially, then slower increase, or maintained strength.
