Document Summary

Calories provide the energy we need to perform vital bodily functions (e. g. heart beat, breathing, etc. ) and to perform exercise. Resting metabolic rate or rmr is the number of calories we need to sustain life. This applies to times when we are resting and mostly inactive. Rmr is dependent on a number of factors. So there is no easy way of accurately calculating rmr. But : rmr = body weight in lbs x 10 kcal/lb, for example: if dave weighs 150 lbs then , rmr = 150 lbs x 10 kcal/lb = 1,500 kcal. In addition to those, fever and stress lead to an increase in rmr while heat, cold, fasting or starvation could decrease rmr. The #1 factor that determines rmr is the amount of lean muscle mass in the body! Age: young adults = higher rmr, older adults loss lean body mass and that slows rmr. Height: tall people have higher rmr"s.
