Morphemes: the smallest units of language that can be associated with meaning or grammatical function. The root expresses the fundamental meaning of the word. Every word contains at least one root morpheme. The root usually belongs to a lexical category: Noun (n): occurs after determiners, possessive pronouns, quantifiers, adjectives. Verb (v): occurs with past tense, progressive aspect, with third person singular -s, after to and auxiliary verbs. Adjective (a): occurs with comparative, superlative, degree words. Look for patterns; think of other words with the same affixes. Ion: the process, result of __" selection, expression, pollution. Al: of, pertaining to, like, suitable for __" accidental, communal, suffixal. Ity: state, quality of being __" rigidity, intensity, fragility. Optional, option, opt: all share the basic meaning. Pay attention to the meaning and ignore certain spelling (and pronunciation) differences. Example: deactivation deactivation: 5: de + act + iv(e) + at(e) + ion.
